Strengthening of the Youth in Polog for Better Economic Resilience

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Introduction:
This study presents the results of a community assessment survey regarding youth perceptions in the workforce. The survey was designed by the Institute for Leadership and Public Policy (ILPP) and administered to youth in the Polog Region of North Macedonia. The findings provide ILPP with a better understanding of youth perceptions and engagement in the labor market. This research is part of the Empowered Youth – Resilient Economy project implemented by ILPP.
Methods:
Data were collected through online surveys. The survey, titled “Strengthened Youth – Healthy Economy”, was distributed to youth in the Polog Region, collecting 124 responses. Surveys were provided in both Albanian and Macedonian. The information gathered reflects youth perceptions of the labor market in North Macedonia and their engagement in the workforce.
Findings:
- 89 respondents answered “Somewhat” when asked if they feel there are many opportunities in the labor market in North Macedonia (n=124).
- 43 respondents answered “Somewhat” when asked if they feel their education has prepared them for the labor market (n=124).
- 54 respondents answered “Somewhat” when asked if they feel they have been taught professional skills necessary to succeed in the labor market (n=124).
- 59.7% of respondents answered “Yes” when asked if they have ever had an internship or job.
- Of those who have never had a job or internship, 28 respondents said “I do not know where to look for internships or jobs” (n=124).
- 100% of respondents answered “Yes” when asked if they think internships would help secure jobs later in their career (n=124).
- 93 respondents indicated that “Foreign languages” is a desired skill in the labor market (n=124).
- 55 respondents selected “Career counselors or advisors at my school” and “local youth groups/organizations” when asked what resources could help them find an internship or job (n=124).
- 57 respondents answered “Somewhat” when asked if they felt they understood what employers were looking for and which industries were hiring (n=124).
- 109 respondents answered “The salary is too low here” when asked why they think young people are leaving North Macedonia to find work (n=124).
